Johnny likes his cell phone to be simple, but lately he’s been thinking about an Apple iPhone or something similar. The latest phone to catch his eye is the Palm Pre, and this one also got him thinking. He found an article that talks about the changing metaphors in computing, and began to see the Pre as something special. It changes a metaphor.
The metaphors in computing are many — hard vs. soft (hardware, software, hard drive, soft reboot). On the Web, there are others — home, back, bookmark. But the Pre touches on the save metaphor, the sync metaphor, and the cloud metaphor (as in “cloud computing“).
Metaphors are ways to make the unapproachable approachable. They can also be traps. A device that changes these metaphors — that breaks mental traps — is worthy of attention, Denovo believes.
