When you host “Spam & Eggs: A Johnny Denovo Mystery” for your local bookclub, you might use the following questions as discussion points:
- The book jumps between locales. Were these captured well? Did you feel as if you also moved geographically?
- Denovo combines instinct and logic in some new ways in order to solve crimes. Did these seem realistic? Did you identify with how he thinks?
- Was Mona a strong enough female counterpoint in the story?
- Who was your favorite character? Are there characters you want to see more or less of?
- A theory of the limbic brain played a role in the book. Was that something you were familiar with before reading the book? Does it make you think differently about your own decision-making processes?
- Metaphors are discussed at length and used by Denovo as clues. What were the major metaphors? What twists in interpretation of the metaphors were used by the author as the story unfolded?
- The book moves between internal dialog/introspection and action scenes. Which worked best? What differences in writing style did you notice between the two?
- Other readers have commented that the characters seem very realistic and fleshed out. Do you agree? How did the author achieve this (or fail to)?
- The book is less violent and gruesome than many mysteries on the market. Did you miss it? Or was it a relief?
- This may be the start of a mystery series. What aspects would entice you to read another mystery in the series? What would stop you?
These are just suggestions. There are many other possible questions and discussion points.
Happy reading!
